London has dangerous levels of air pollution which impact our health and contributes to climate change. The majority of pollution in London comes from road transport.
Replacing petrol and diesel vehicles with electric vehicles (EVs) will help to improve local air quality by reducing harmful emissions such as nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide.
We are supporting Islington residents switching to electric vehicles providing an on-street charging infrastructure. We know the majority of residents in Islington do not have off-street parking and cannot charge an EV at home.
Despite their environmental benefits, EVs are still motorised vehicles which contribute to road congestion and road safety issues as well as contributing to pollution during manufacture. Public and active transport, like walking and cycling, are our top transport priority.

How we choose charging locations
Choosing locations for charging points depends on the network operator and type of charging point. When investigating locations for new charging points, we consider:
- availability of electricity
- parking restrictions
- footway clearance widths
- preserving history and heritage
- demand in the area
- visibility.
Parking
Electric vehicles receive the cheapest residential parking permits. This is because they produce less air pollution. But pollutants from tyres and manufacture and disposal of the battery mean prices will not stay the same each year.
Business parking permits are also cheaper for electric vehicles.

Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ)
The Ultra Low Emission Zone now covers all areas within the North and South Circular Roads, which covers all of Islington. Check through TfL whether your vehicle meets the standards.
Time it takes to charge an electric vehicle
The time it takes to recharge an EV depends on various factors such as:
- the power output of the charging point
- the size of battery.
A typical EV can be recharged in approximately one hour from a 50kW charger or roughly four hours from a 7kW charger.
