Crane licence

Cranes are not permitted on the highway until a licence has been agreed and issued. The aim of licensing is to balance the needs of businesses and residents with the public expectation of an unobstructed footway.

How to apply

You must apply at least ten working days in advance, to allow enough time for us to process the licence and ensure the co-ordination of works. Please make sure you enclose the correct documentation as incorrect documentation could delay the process. To apply, please complete the crane online application form. As part of the application, you must provide:

• A complete description and extent of works carried out on site
• Estimated dates the licence is required
• Confirmation that you hold a public liability policy in for the sum of £25million for a tower crane and £10million for a mobile crane.
• Dates that you require the licence for
• A traffic management plan, where traffic flow will be affected during the erection of the crane, while in operation and when the crane is being removed, if applicable
• A pedestrian management plan where pedestrians will be affected during the erection of the crane, while in operation and when the crane is being removed, if applicable.

If the street needs to be closed for the purpose of the works you must apply for a road closure. Applications will take approximately six weeks. This lead in time will increase for strategic routes up to 8-12 weeks. For all road closure applications please email streetworks@islington.gov.uk.

Fees and payment

The licence fee is £540.00 If your application is approved online payment instructions will be emailed to the applicant. Upon receipt of your online payment, we will issue the licence documents by email.

If traffic flow will be affected, you are also responsible for the provision and costs of traffic management and traffic signs on all affected roads, including any diversionary routes.

Amendment request(s) after licence have been issued would incur additional charges.
