What to do if you smell gas

Call the free, 24-hour Gas Emergency Services hotline on 0800 111 999.

If you smell gas, think you have a gas leak, or are worried that fumes containing carbon monoxide are escaping from a gas appliance, please call the free Gas Emergency Services hotline immediately on 0800 111 999.

You should also:

  • open all doors and windows to ventilate the property
  • make sure not to turn on/off any electrical switches
  • extinguish all naked flames,
  • stop smoking, and do not strike matches or any other way of making fire
  • open doors manually where there are any electrical security entry phones or locks.

You will need to have the following information when you call the hotline to report a gas leak:

  • your name and phone number
  • address or location of the suspected gas escape or gas emergency
  • number of people at the property
  • where the smell is strongest
  • how long the smell has been noticeable
  • whether any neighbours are affected
  • your name and phone number
  • any special circumstances or access information.
