Protecting your business
Make sure that you report any criminal activity to the police and report anti-social behaviour to our team. Help safeguard your business by following our advice.
Shoplifting
The police can prosecute or apply other sanctions against shoplifters.
The police may refer vulnerable individuals to Islington Council’s cost of living support page or refer those facing mental health or addiction issues to support schemes.
What you can do
- Report all shoplifting incidents to the police.
- Train staff on reporting procedures.
- Ensure CCTV access for police.
- Inform police about banned individuals or repeat offenders.
Drug Taking and Dealing
Police can use stop and search, premises closure orders, and search warrants. They can also conduct regular patrols to deter and catch offenders, as well as engage with drug users to offer support.
What you can do
- Report drug-related incidents to the police.
- Train staff on reporting procedures.
- Ensure CCTV access for police.
Mental Health Emergencies
Treat mental health emergencies seriously. Call 999 if:
- Someone’s life is at risk.
- You cannot keep yourself or others safe.
Rough Sleeping
Islington Council supports rough sleepers. If you see someone sleeping rough, contact StreetLink at 0300 5000 914 or visit StreetLink website.
Hate Crime
Report all hate crime to the police. Hate crime targets individuals based on religion, race, transgender identity, disability, or sexual orientation. Report hate crimes to help victims and improve public services.

Helping someone in distress
- In emergencies, call 999. For non-urgent reports, call 101 or report online.
- Identify yourself and avoid physical contact.
- Speak clearly and ask for an 'In Case of Emergency' (ICE) contact.
- Provide support and stay with them until help arrives.

Your Safer Neighbourhoods Team (SNT) is a group of Met police officers dedicated to serving your community. The team is made up of officers based in your area (or 'ward'), supported by additional officers from the wider area.
