When we plan highways maintenance work, we use:
- data collected and recorded during the Highways team's regular inspections
- condition surveys - taken every year, both internal and external - to identify areas that need future regeneration from reconstruction and resurfacing programmes, including both carriageways and pavements.
We undertake planned maintenance where streets have exceeded their life spans or generally become beyond repair due to wear and tear. We also plan around areas near sensitive locations such as schools, parks, public services (like medical centres), transport hubs and town centres, that have high footfall.
Highways maintenance in 2024/25
We have 295km of streets in Islington of which 281km are maintained by Islington highways. 14km of this is maintained by Transport for London (TfL).
The Capital funded programme for Pavements and Carriageways for 2024/25 is currently in the programming stage and this page will be updated once the roads have been confirmed.
The proposal for the 2024/25 Department for Transport funding is to undertake a carriageway patch resurfacing programme. This is currently in the programming stage and this page will be updated once the roads have been confirmed

Reusing materials for a greener Islington
We support and explore ways to create a sustainable environment - making sure changes we make balance resources, protect and sustain living things and support everyone's health and wellbeing.
With the works we undertake as part of the planned maintenance program we include any greening opportunities as well as supporting and maintaining net zero carbon - making sure we set things up to only produce as much greenhouse gas as we remove.
When renewing footways, we store as much of the old footway material as we can - like block, artificial stone and tactile paving, and street furniture - at our depots at Fairbridge Road and Downham Road. We then use these again when making repairs.
