Memorial benches in our parks

Islington Council has a long tradition of installing memorial benches in parks. We provide a standard bench constructed of teak from a sustainable source which can be engraved with a suitable inscription. We do not put plaques on existing benches.

If you would like to have a memorial bench placed in one of our parks the process is as follows.

1. You let us know the site and location where you would like the bench. If there is a bench without an inscription, we are fine with replacing it with a new bench for you. We will try to accommodate your preferred location, however if this is not possible we will suggest more suitable location.
2. You tell us the inscription that you would like on the bench.
3. We provide a quote and a visualisation of the bench for you to approve.
4. Once approved, we then order and install the bench. Delivery of the bench takes about 8 to 10 weeks from the manufacturer. It then needs to be installed which may take another couple of weeks.
5. When you are happy with the bench, you then pay for it.

The benches with the engraving and installation usually cost between £850.00 and £1,000.00.

Should you wish to have a memorial bench please contact us.

The council will be responsible for the maintenance of the bench and we aim to do this for as long as possible. Many of the benches in our parks are over 30 years old. However, should the bench be damaged or become uneconomical to repair we will remove the bench in order to maintain a safe environment for park users. Should this happen, we will endeavour to contact the person who placed the order and inform them of the situation. If we are unsuccessful we reserve the right to offer the space previously occupied by the bench to someone else.

We will keep a record of your contact details, however if these change, please contact us to update your details.
