How we’re tackling damp and mould

Find out how we're taking action to tackle damp and mould in our council homes.

What we're doing to tackle damp and mould

As part of our commitment to tackling damp and mould in all of our council homes, we are:

  • Investing more than £2m every year in tackling damp and mould. This includes hiring extra staff and investing in more ventilation and insulation.
  • Operating a dedicated damp and mould action team, who identify the root causes of damp and mould and get it fixed. The team also give advice on how to manage condensation and how to get support if you need it – for example, with heating bills.
  • Investing more than £63m in 2024/25 alone in major improvements to make homes warmer, safer and more comfortable. This includes new windows, roofs, kitchens and bathrooms, as well as other improvements to homes and blocks, like upgraded lifts.
  • Running a boiler testing scheme to get ahead of heating problems before the winter.
  • Clearing gutters of leaves and other blockages to avoid penetrating damp.
  • Rolling out remote moisture sensors so we can stop problems before they develop.
  • Running compulsory damp and mould training for all housing staff, so everyone can spot the signs and give advice.
  • Meeting regularly with our health and social care partners to share information and coordinate our response.
