You can check our register to find out if your landlord needs to get a licence for a property you rent. You can do this by entering your postcode into the licence finder.
Check if your landlord needs a licence
If your property requires a licence but doesn’t have one, you are entitled to claim back any rent paid during the time there was meant to be a licence in place, but wasn’t. Organisations such as Justice for Tenants offer free advice on rent repayment orders, which is the order made by a judge that requires a landlord to pay back rent to a tenant. It can require a landlord to return up to 12 months' rent.

Report an unlicensed property
If you suspect that your home is unlicensed or that your landlord is breaching their licence, you can report this by email to residential.envh@islington.gov.uk or call 020 7527 3083.
