Developing Islington Museum Consultation

This consultation has ended

Start date 08 March 2022
End date 05 April 2022

Islington Museum brings the story of the Islington to life through a collection of fascinating objects. Previously a volunteer led project at the Town Hall, the museum has been at the current site in St John Street since 2008. Unaltered since opening, the museum is getting a full redesign in 2022-23.

The Heritage team, with the help of our local community, has already started to reimagine the space. Now we are collecting feedback from more Islington residents, before developing more detailed ideas. We want to hear your thoughts and insights about what the future museum should look like, feel like and include.

Making sure we get it right - what have we found out so far?

We have spoken with 148 individuals so far, and collected an additional 62 feedback wall comments. Local people have shared what they like and dislike about the current gallery and their ideas for the future museum via surveys, a feedback wall, 1:1 interviews and focus groups.

We have collated and analysed our findings from our Stage One consultation. Read our findings below:

Consultation:

After looking at the initial feedback, the team has developed a number of early concepts for the future museum and shared these ideas with local adults, families and teachers at three focus groups in February 2022.

We are now sharing ideas more widely to collect additional feedback, to make sure a range of local voices have a hand in shaping the new museum. If you are interested in sharing your views, we would love to hear them. Get involved by:

If you are interested in finding out more about the co-production programme, please get in touch via islington.museum@islington.gov.uk. We will share recruitment information as the project develops.

What is next?

Your responses to this consultation will shape the next steps as we begin to develop detailed plans for the new museum.

Longer-term, residents are invited to engage with the project via upcoming co-production programming to help us make decisions around key areas of the redesign.

The museum will close in 2022 and the refreshed museum will reopen featuring a vibrant welcome area, new displays celebrating local heritage, and exciting opportunities to play, learn and interact in the gallery. Dates still to be confirmed.
