Jobs and local economy evidence and statistics

Islington is a vibrant borough located within the heart of London, adjacent to the City - the global centre of financial services - and close to the West End and Holborn.

Despite the recession, the economic climate in Islington remains relatively stable and prospects appear good, although cuts to public sector funding have not only reduced the number of jobs in the public sector, but are also affecting many businesses and households.

In 2014, there were 230,000 jobs in Islington, a ratio of 1.39 for every person of working age (16-64) in the borough. There is also easy access to the vast number and range of jobs in the City, West End and across London.

However, not all Islington residents are benefiting from these opportunities. Despite its perception of wealth and affluence, Islington has high levels of poverty and unemployment, with extreme inequalities and increased polarisation between rich and poor.

This pages provide access to research and statistics on the Islington economy including key sectors, types of businesses and planning policy. They also provide a picture of unemployment and, closely linked to this, the high levels of poverty and deprivation.
